Old computers, keyboards and Linux

So, this website theme is gonna change. When I get bored, I change the theme. I do the same thing with old laptops that nobody wants. You know, the laptops that folk donate to thrift shops, or public places that can receive and recycle electronics.

So, now I am back to it. I need to change this website them. A couple of times. And, when I get my new “old” laptop, I’ll install and then distro hop some Linux desktops. I don’t paint or draw. I am not an artist. I am not into interior design so I can’t move stuff around, since I don’t have that much stuff. So, old (not new) old computers and the Linux operating system is my equivalent to fixing a car, or computer, games, etc. Been doing this since Fidonet, XT/AT desktops, floppy disks, and all the old things…all the way to MS DOS.

The more Microsoft Windows developed, the more annoyed I got. Windows took away my ability to tell the computer what to do. My bad. I should have taken some programming courses, but I never did. So, guess what now Microsoft owns your computer and you’ve got to go through this operating system to get ANYTHING done. Dummy.

Kept buying desktops, then laptops, and of course old equipment piles up. One day, I’m trying to figure something out and I run across this YouTube video talking about something called Linux. Says you can put this on your computer to replace Windows. I watched the video, and then a couple more. Then, I cautiously installed Ubuntu 16 (I believe) on one of my old desktops. First impression – it was beautiful. More! More! The more at ease I became with trying out distros, the happier I was. Windows PC and laptop kinda just was there when I needed it.

Then I learned I could sorta design the way my desktop looked. Are you kidding me! Went crazy. Linux Mint (my go to Distro), OpenSuse (loved but to complicated), Fedora, Arco Linux, Crunchbang, ….kept going, Eventually I slowed down. Some Windows habits didn’t change, and Linux Mint just worked – all the time, on whatever desktop/laptop I installed on.

Politics is crazy right now. Doesn’t do anything for me but depress me. But this…working on a laptop just tinkering with it makes me feel better. Windows or Linux (can’t afford Mac) I feel a sense of control. I can make my desktop environment look really cool or exciting and I want to hit the keyboard.

And for now, that is the goal and the healing.
